WFC 50: Natural History of California Wild Vertebrates

Animal Biology Collections

Ruth Gustafson collects materials to support ALL animal-related research with the exception of Veterinary Medicine and Clinical Medicine research using lab animal models. Disciplines supported for animal research include: behavior; anatomy & physiology; breeding and genetics; ecology & conservation biology; growth & development; nutrition & feeding; reproduction; and taxonomy & systematics. Resources in Shields tend to be located in four Library of Congress call number areas on the 3rd floor of Shields Library: QL – Zoology ; SF — Animal Agriculture ; SH — Fisheries & Aquaculture ; SK – Wildlife and Hunting.  Marine Science materials may additionally be located on the 2nd floor Shields in the GC area.

The Carlson Health Sciences library (now closed) housed materials to support VetMed which includes information on animal diseases/pathology and diagnosis/treatment which are classed in the SF area. NOTE: This is the only VetMed library collection in the UC system.

  • ALL Sciences (except Clinical Medicine), Shields Library:  The animal-related print collections are located mainly on the 3rd floor of Shields Library.   All Shields Library floor maps are found at https://library.ucdavis.edu/floor-maps/
  • Carlson Health Sciences Library (HSL), Southwest UC Davis campus.  This library closed in June 2022 and the collections are being transferred to 2 locations: Shields Library 3rd floor, and Northern Regional (UC) Library (Storage) Facility in Richmond.  These HSL materials will be noted in the UC Davis Library catalog as being in Temporary Storage and may be requested for checkout at Shields or for digitization.
