Open Education Invited Speaker Series
The AggieOpen program partners with departments and programs across the UC Davis campus to feature internal and external speakers in an Open Education Invited Speaker Series. Each Open Education Week, the AggieOpen team will bring distinguished educators to share their research and work to promote a more equitable educational experience for students in higher education through the use of openly licensed learning materials.
Topics will address important issues in Open Education and offer speakers the opportunity to share their research with a broad audience.

- Invited Speaker 2023 - Jasmine Roberts-Crews
Our inaugural AggieOpen Invited Speaker series on March 7, 2023, featured Ohio State Professor Jasmine Roberts-Crews. Her presentation is titled "A Call for Reparative Justice in Open Education Labor." Audience Q&A follows the presentation.
This talk discusses the intersections between race, gender, and labor in open education. Using a Black feminist lens, the talk urgently calls for reparative justice in open education labor. The audience will understand how to reclaim justice in open education labor through equitable practices, communal care, and rest. - Invited Speaker 2024 - Marco Seiferle-Valencia
For Open Education Week 2024, the UC Davis Library hosted Open Education Librarian & Assistant Professor Marco Seiferle-Valencia, who presented "AI Spring: Generative AI, Open Education, and Climate Catastrophe" on Tuesday, March 5th.
While AI promises to revolutionize many fields, including education, this technology's unsustainable carbon footprint and other devastating ecological impacts mean that revolutionary progress is far from guaranteed. In fact, the rapid, widespread adoption of energy and resource-hungry AI invites revolutionary regression. This talk discusses the environmental impacts of generative AI by examining the often hidden ecological costs of these new tools and asks how we, as open practitioners, can ensure the burgeoning collaboration between AI tools and open education serves learners, teachers, and the environment.
