Table 1 shows the most frequent principal diagnoses during hospital stays in 2010. In 2010, there were 39 million hospital stays in the U.S.—1,261 stays per 10,000 population. The 10 most frequent principal diagnoses accounted for 30 percent of all stays in 2018.
