EVE 16: Wild Davis

Getting Started

Faculty:  Laci Gerhart lgerhart@ucdavis.edu

Use the resources on this guide to locate publications about the natural history of California and about the urban ecology of the UCD campus and town of Davis.

Organismal Search Terms

The UC Davis Shields Library uses Library of Congress Subject Headings (LCSH). Each library subject database — such as BIOSIS Previews or Zoological Record — also uses subject lists that can help you precisely search your topic. All life sciences subject databases will have taxonomic searching features available for searching by various taxa groups such as kingdoms or orders or families.

Key Resources for EVE 16

These subject databases may be demonstrated or discussed at the library session.

Search BIOSIS Previews (for ecosystems or plant/animal information) or Zoological Record (animals) for the basic biology of any organism including: anatomy and physiology, behavior, ecology, genetics, growth and development, molecular biology, nutrition and feeding, reproduction, and taxonomy and systematics. NOTE:  Zoological Record is an essential zoological database for taxonomy, systematics, and new species records. Zoological Record is the first database to search for wildlife, particularly rare and endangered species.

ASFA is focused strictly on aquatic sciences and fisheries literature as indexed by FAO at a extensive international and gray literature level.
