Linking ORCID to eRA Commons

NIH will be requiring all senior and key personnel to link their ORCID to their eRA Commons account. See this short video demonstrating how to link these accounts. Instructions begin at the .47 time mark.

  • Start by logging into your eRA Commons account
  • Go to the Personal Profile section of your account
  • Locate the "Create or connect your ORCID iD" link (located on the top, left of the Personal Profile page)
  • You will be routed to the ORCID platform – log in and authorize NIH access to your profile

If you get an error from eRA Commons when attempting to link your ORCID, contact the eRA Service Desk. This error occurs when you have two eRA Commons accounts, and the other account is already linked to the ORCID. The ORCID can be linked to only one eRA Commons account.

Linking ORCID to SciENcv

NIH will be requiring all senior and key personnel will be required to link their ORCID to Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae (SciENcv). To access SciENcv, you must first log into NCBI as this is where the SciENcv service resides.

  • To link your ORCID to your SciENcv profile, click Edit next to "My Profile" on the SciENcv page.
  • On the Edit page, click the ORCID link to connect to your ORCID.
  • Sign into ORCID when prompted.

Linking ORCID to NCBI Account

Linking your ORCID and NCBI accounts allows you to pull data from ORCID into Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae (SciENcv).

  • Log into NCBI
  • Once logged in, your profile name should display in the upper right corner
  • Click on your profile name, then click on "Account Settings"
  • Under the Linked Accounts section click "Add account"
  • Under the "Link a new 3rd-party account" section, enter ORCID in the search box
  • Click on the ORCID link under the Account header
  • Sign into your ORCID account if prompted and authorize access to NCBI

Once access is granted you will be taken back to the Linked Accounts page and should now see ORCID listed under Your Linked Accounts. NB: The more you fill in your ORCID record, the more information you will be able to automatically pull into SciENcv when you create a biosketch.

Creating a NIH Biosketch in SciENcv

NIH will require the use of Science Experts Network Curriculum Vitae (SciENcv) to complete and certify the Common Forms (i.e., Biographical Sketch, Current and Pending (Other) Support). SciENcv will generate a digitally certified PDF for your application. NIH's webpage Biosketch Format Pages, Instructions, and Samples will be updated as plans evolve.

Log into SciENcv and select "New Document". There are three ways to create a new NIH Biosketch in SciENcv:

Option 1: Manually entering your information into a SciENcv template

  • Enter a name for your new document
  • Select "NIH Biosketch"
  • Select “Start with a blank document”

Option 2: Making a duplicate of an existing document

  • Enter a name for your new document
  • Select "NIH Biosketch"
  • Select a previously created profile from the “Existing Biosketch” drop-down menu.
  • Click Create. SciENcv will generate a duplicate of the selected existing document.

Option 3: Using an automated data feed from an external source: NIH eRA Commons, NSF, and ORCID account holders who have linked their accounts to NCBI can populate their NIH Biosketch with the information stored in their eRA, NFS, or ORCID accounts.

  • Enter a name for your new document
  • Select "NIH Biosketch"
  • Select "Use an external source"
  • Select a data provider from the External Source drop-down menu. Note that your SciENcv account must be linked to the external data source account. (This short video focuses on features in SciENcv that help users connect profile and citation information stored in an ORCID record.)
  • Click Create. SciENcv will automatically populate the new document with the information stored in your selected external data source. NB: Be aware that when external information is brought into a profile, most of the information is editable, but it will not automatically update when changes are made to the external source.

Senior/Key Personnel should verify that their ORCID and eRA Commons IDs are linked in the SciENcv Biosketch.
