ANS 42: Companion Animals

Companion Animals Collections

Ruth Gustafson collects materials to support all animal-related research with the exception of Veterinary Medicine and Clinical Medicine research using lab animal models. Disciplines supported for companion animal literature include: behavior; anatomy & physiology; breeding and genetics; ecology & conservation biology; growth & development; nutrition & feeding; reproduction; and taxonomy & systematics. Companion animal-related publications found in Shields Library are mainly located in three Library of Congress call number areas on the 3rd floor: QL – Zoology ; SF — Animal Agriculture (where the majority of companion animal resources are located) ; SH — Fisheries & Aquaculture.  Many Animal Welfare titles may also be found on the 2nd floor Shields in the HV 4701 - HV 4711 areas.   There are over 1,800 companion animal titles in the print/online collections.

  • ALL Sciences (except Clinical Human Medicine) at Shields Library:  The animal-related print collections are located mainly on the 3rd floor of Shields Library.   All Shields Library floor maps are found at https://library.ucdavis.edu/floor-maps/
  • Carlson Health Sciences Library (HSL), Southwest UCD campus.  This library closed in June 2022 and the Veterinary Medical collections are now in three locations: Shields Library 3rd floor stacks; Shields Library Reference Collection (2nd floor); or SLF-North (SLF-N) - the UC Libraries Systemwide Library (Storage) Facility in Richmond.   Any UC Davis Library materials stored at SLF-N may be found and REQUESTed by searching the UC Libraries Advanced setting of the Library Catalog and looking at UC Berkeley holdings to display the Location as SLF-N.
